I got to this animal shelter, when I found a small puppy out on the streets. It was raining. The Veterinaly office advised me to the shelter in Smederevo, located about 50 km away from the capital Belgrade.
The shelter owns a comparatively large estate. But unfortunately this property is very dirty and full of plastic, metal abatement and old and exploited cars.
A small part has already been cleaned and fenced. However the mesh wire has a lot of holes through which the dogs gladly escape from and then have to be captured again.
There are about 12 boxes even there are 60 or 70 dogs. You can see four she-dogs with their litter, which lay on small pieces of cardboard or partially on parts of metal. The metal is either very hot because of the sun or very cold because of low temperature. There are no water bowls in the boxes.
Once per day, at 9:30am, someone comes and brings water and food to the dogs.
The food usually is bread diluted with water. Sometimes they get leftovers from the butcher – but always too little.
None of these dogs is castrated. That is why more and more dogs come and there is not enough space for them. Because of the shortage of space more and more dogs attack each other and bite each other. There is just little medical supply.
Unfortunately there exists no aid money. The dogs were supplied by remains and from a small part of what is left over of the retirement pay of a lady. In a manner of speaking, she is the founder of this shelter.
With help I could find a merchant for animal food. According to his price list, one kilo of provender costs 0.60 €. Actually this merchant would deliver the food. But unfortunately they do not have enough money. But in my opinion, the disorder on the area should be cleaned first. Then the dogs would have more space.
The male dogs have to be separated from the she-dogs. Then should there be several boxes so that the dogs are not extradited to the atmospheric conditions. Actually I already have few feedbacks from animal protectors, who want to help. And there also would be several food donations and donations in kind.
But another problem is the transportation to Serbia, but I am very optimistic that we will find a carrier or get a private transporter to bring the donations to the shelter.
We also need local active support. For example I drive to the shelter and we try to clean, to build fences, to build enclosures and so on. Castrations are very important. With this, the shelter urgently needs support.
