2 animal shelters in Russia
Dear pet lovers,
I want to use the opportunity of the platform of PHU e.V. to introduce my project: „Animal protection in Russia“ and to increase its popularity.
First of all I would like to introduce myself:
My name is Gudrun Ostwald and I live in Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Many years I got involved with animal protection only passively until I met a young Russian veterinarian by chance. Dr. Anna Essipova comes from St. Petersburg.
She lives in Spain and travels a lot through Europe for animal protection organisations to neuter dogs and cats and take care of the medically.
Dr. Essipova supports 2 animal shelters in Russia.
One is the animal shelter in Priut St. Petersburg und the other “Dogshope” in Vyborg (border to Finland).
Both animal shelters are managed privately und are just able to get by in a rough-and-ready manner with the donations. There is no state aid available.
Animal Shelter Priut
The animal shelter Priut is momentarily completely overcrowded with 700 dogs with increasing tendency. Du to the very poor economic situation in Russia more and more dogs are being abandoned or at best are being disposed of in animal shelters..
Many animals become victims of the chaotic traffic in Russia or they are being poisoned, slewn, shot. (see Russia report by A. Martin).
The head of the animal shelter of Priut, Tatjana Sheina, is a very committed animal protector. She regularly invites school classes to introduce children to the animal protection.
Press and TV are being invited to broadcast the catastophic condition of the Russian animal protection and to inform about the desolate financial situation of the animal shelter.
She tries to win as many people for the animal protection as possible. She constantly is in search of sponsors.
But all this dedication is not at all enough to take care of 700 dogs. Sponsors for an animal shelter are few and far between in Russia. The conditions medical supply are getting worse as the local veterinary clinic only treats animals for cash payment because the animal shelter Priut is in debt with € 10,000!
A fatal situation for the injured animals which get found every day. PRIUT urgently needs sponsors and donators for food and mainly for the medical support of the mostly seriously injured animals.
Animal Shelter Dogshope
The animal shelter DOGSHOPE in Vyborg faces an even worse situation as animal rescue receives no official support from the country. So far the head of the animal shelter Irina Subbotkina got a bit of support from Finnish animal rescuers.
But the economic situation in Finland is not as bright anymore so less and less donations reach DOGSHOPE. The last 2 months I was only able to keep DOGSHOPE alive through a very generous donation by a German lady.
From 01.09.2009 another very kind animal rescuer with a big heart for the Russian dogs agreed to support DOGSHOPE with a three-digit amount every month!
DOGSHOPE needs a monthly amount of approximately € 1,000.00 for food, medical supplies, electricity, water. No employees are included here.
Two sponsors raise approximately € 350.00 monthly. In DOGSHOPE live around 300 dogs with an increasing tendency as well!
Since March 2009 a car is missing for collecting abandoned dogs which can be found injured on the streets.
An insane man covered the shelters car with the vet inside with petrol and burnt it in March 2009. Luckily the vet got away with harmless burn but the car was totally damaged. There is no financial possibility for a car. Due to this fact DOGSHOPE is unable to fly out the dogs via Helsinki anymore!
Irina Subbotkina fights every day for the survival of the dogs. She fights in vain and would need to “reduce” the population if there cannot be found any sponsor for the animal shelter who agree to support the shelter on a monthly basis with food.
A terrible thought!
Irina Subbotkina dedicates her whole life to this animals! She cannot be left alone! I am not able to support the animal shelter anymore with the help it needs on my own.
I urgently need support from Germany for both animal shelters.
Unfortunately the German support for Russian animal rescue is very small.
So far every mayor animal rescue organisation being active in Europe and worldwide refused any support. Either I did not get an answer at all or only received flimsy excuses.
It might be the case that there is an existing fear to get involved in Russian animal rescue or it is not enough promotionally effective.
It makes me loose my courage fighting in vain! I fight against ignorance, prejudice and lack of interest. Being active in Russian animal rescue for many people is too much effort.
It is easier to take part in west European animal rescue because the success rate is higher.
Regarding the Russian animal rescue dogs, are only 2nd class dogs if not even 3rd class.
I plead in the name of both animal shelters Priut and DOGSHOPE and its animals in need for your help!
