Killing of Italien Greyhounds in Spain
In Spain it is a common tradition to hang unqualified and disused Italian Greyhounds (Galgos) or sighthounds, which were usually used as hounds.
Of course you can use the cord more than just once. So a bullet would be waste of material. The dogs dither for their life and die very slow and torturous. Usually, they are hung up so low, that the hindpaws still touch the ground.
This is done maybe as additional punishment for their failure or maybe just to give them cynical “chance” to escape. The hounds are kept in narrow crates for their whole life. They barely receive feed, even enough to survive. No one cares about, no one strokes them.
They have just one single use. Hunting. During the hunting season, their feed is again reduced to raise their hunting instincts. Are they unqualified or do they show not enough hunting instincts or are to slow or not bulletproof, they are disposed.
This has never been different. Traditions don’t change that fast. And unfortunately: If there is no complainant in sight, there will of course be no judge.
Greyhounds in Need (United Kingdom) started a petition for the Greyhounds , which is directed to the Spanish government.
First of all it is important to publish this outrage, because now, Spain assumed the chair of the Council of Europe for the next 6 months.
The guidelines of the European Community according to animal protection do not agree with the guidelines in Spain itself. A change of the barbaric treatment of the hounds can only be effected by the Spanish law.
Please sign this petition before 30th April 2010 and inform friends and colleagues, so that as much as possible people are informed and as much as possible signs can be collected.
Thank you very much!
