Greek fund-raiser
This is an example for ideal regional work for animal protection in Katerini in the north of Greece.
In 2009, the animals rights organization “Elpida ke Storgi” (hope and tenderness) in Katerini in the north of Greece arranged a fund-raiser with movies and live music in aid of the many Greek stray animals and to build a new animal shelter. This was arranged by Chairwoman Maria Maramis Harlan in cooperation with the local city council.
A lot of artists performed unsalaried accompanied this campaign with their music.
Furthermore there is twice a week a radio program, which is called “scream of the animals”. It broaches the issue of the agony of the many stray animals and informs about the urgent needed castrations of pets and stray animals. A fact, which is unfortunately still uncommon and not accepted in Greece.
From the animal protection point of view, these two examples show that you can change a lot, even in “problematic areas”. You just need well elaborated campaigns and a good network of multiplicators from politics, media and culture:
A wide public audience can be reached and a development to improve the situation can be boosted.
