Hanged dogs in olive grove
On 14th May 2009, Maria Papadai from TSV in Sitia received a call, in which she was told about four hanged dogs.
She promptly drove to the named place about 1 kilometer outside of Sitia in the east of Crete.
There, she found five hanged dogs.
he called the police and the public veterinarian. They established that the five dogs choked miserably, because their pads touched the ground, which elongated their agony.
It took about 8 (!!!!!!!!) hours until they died.
On 8.6.09, we received the following message from Maria Papadaki:
The police pressed charges against the unknown offender. The mayor pedals the police to find the murderer. But unfortunately it is not easy to find him. No one had seen something. The killing happened in an olive grove.
We published this terrible story. It was published all over Greece. It was shown on TV, all large broadcast stations and newspapers reported about it.
Unfortunately the city itself hesitates to obligate people apprehend the law. Nobody controls whether the dogs have a microchip. Nobody controls how the animals are kept.
The state police should actually control it, but the town hesitates assign them and let them start.
A few years ago, the police didn't want to something against it. Four years ago, we didn't got the right to PRESS CHARGES. They initially did their duty, when we informed the representative of the court.
They didn't know that there are laws for animals.
Police staff, who are younger, are more cooperative. The law for the animals should be more detailed and rigorous.
Unfortunately we don't have a website, because we only have few active members, who are all employed and do a lot for animal protection. So they all don't have much time.
We were asked for help by Vasso Taki, lawyer. So now we ask for you help.

Please write to the mayor of Sitia, Mr. Kouroupakis!
Dear Mr. Kouroupakis,
we refer to you as the Mayor of the city Sitia with an urgent request:
News has spread in Western Europe that recently five dogs have been tortured to death in the city of Sitia.
We are an association of several European Organisations on Animal Welfare, who are very concerned to learn that in Greece / Crete there still are torturers who frequently harm animals' rights without any further legal consequences. We ask you to make every effort to stop this cruelty against animals in your City!
We also ask you to make use of your authority as Mayor to pursuit the culprit who commited the crime statd above consequently. As we learned, too - the torturer is a very well known person in Sitia.
Put an end to this cruelty towards animals!
Dear Sir, you are representative of a region in Crete which first and foremost pospers of tourism from Western Europe. Help to provide tourists coming to Crete in future, too:
This will depend a great deal on whether Crete will act consequently against people who harm animals' dignity and rights.
We ask you to fulfill the policy of the European Community:
Modern Europe has to respect animals rights!
