For now, killings in Iasi stopped
In Romania, street dogs are caught and brought to dog camps. If the camp is overcrowed, they are usually killed. This often happens by striking to death. Time periods are usually not met. The only chance for a dog to leave one of these camps run by authorities alive is that someone comes to adopt them. But you actually cannot call these camps shelters.
In the camp of Iasi live about 400 dogs. About 25 dogs are caught daily.
There recently had been a lot of demonstrations and protests against the killing in Romania. Parallel to this there were a lot of e-mail campaigns von German animal welfare activists, who want to avoid the slaughtering of dogs.
An animal welfarist from Iasi, Andreea Ruxandre Agapi, announced a hunger strike on 4.6.2009, which she maybe wouldn’t have survived, because she is diabetic. She before announced that to the responsible persons and the mayor. On 3.6.2009, she got a call of the second mayor, who wanted to know in details, why she planned the hunger strike.
She claims:
- That the killings are immediately stopped, that the animals are vaccinated and castrated and afterwards are again freed.
- The opening hours in the camp have to be extended. Interested people only have few possibilities to visit this institution. The opening hours are know from 1pm to 3 pm. But most people are working at this time. She claims opening hours from 1 pm to 5 pm that more dogs can be rehomed.
She then was invited to come to the administrative building. She accepted the invitation. She reported that she is in contact with many animal rights activists all over Europe and that a German organization wants to rehome dogs from Romania. As reference, she referred towww.pfotenhilfe-ungarn.de. There, the first dogs from Iasi are presented.
They will start their journey to Hungary on 12.6.2009 and two weeks later continue their trip to Germany.
After several conversations, the responsible persons gave in. They accepted her claim and initiated to stop the killings for now.
